WHAT IS OSTEOPATHY?

Osteopathy is a holistic hands on manual therapy, and uses the philosophy that the body works as a unit. We link the structure of the body with the quality of its function. Osteopaths focus on how the skeleton, joints, muscles, nerves, circulation, connective tissue and internal organs function as a whole. We are interested in the global view of the body, regardless of the location of discomfort. We use techniques such as massage, myofascial release, stretching, joint manipulation and visceral manipulation. Osteopaths will sometimes give advice on specific exercises, general diet and lifestyle. Osteopaths complete a minimum of five years university training in anatomy, physiology, pathology, general medical diagnosis and osteopathic techniques.

TOP TIPS

How to prepare for your first appointment

Home: Image

BOOK IN ADVANCE

It is recommended when you make your initial appointment that you go ahead and make 2 more follow up appointments for yourself in the subsequent trips. This is to ensure continuity of treatment, especially if you have been in pain for a long time. We can absolutely cancel these appointments if you no longer require them. it's just good to be organised!

KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT

Your osteopath will ask about your problem and symptoms. This will include your medical history, any medications you are taking or other factors that may not appear to be directly related to your problem.

Your osteopath will advise you if they can treat you or you need to be referred.

Your osteopath will conduct an examination and clinical tests. These include diagnostic, orthopaedic or neurological tests, postural assessments and activities or exercises, which will help determine how best to manage your condition.

The examination may include passive and active movements. The osteopath may lift your arms or legs and you may be asked to bend over. Sometimes, the osteopath will ask you to remove your shirt, which is to help them further diagnose how your spine is moving. Be sure to wear comfortable, flexible clothing and appropriate underwear.

Osteopathy takes a whole-body approach to treatment. Your osteopath may look at the area that is troubling you as well as other parts of your body. For example, if you have a sore knee, your osteopath may also look at your ankle, pelvis, and back.

Your osteopath may also provide education and advice to help you manage your condition between treatments. This may include giving you exercises to do at home or work.

DRINK WATER BEFORE AND AFTER YOUR SESSION

When we start working with your body for the first time, there is a chance we might move some things that haven't been moved in a while. This includes your lymphatic system- being hydrated before your appointment will moderate your response to treatment.
